The individual spoke on the condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak publicly. A New York City probation officer interviewed the ex-president for a report that will be submitted to trial Judge Juan M. Merchan before Trump’s sentencing on July 11 in his hush money criminal case. The report can assist Merchan in determining the consequences for Trump after his felony conviction on May 30 for tampering with business records to conceal a possible sex scandal. The judge has the authority to choose from a variety of punishments, including probation and community service, all the way up to a four-year prison sentence. Trump, who chose not to testify during the trial, participated in a probation interview on Monday via video call from his home at the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, accompanied by his lawyer Todd Blanche. City officials are denying claims that the arrangement received complaints about being given preferential treatment. In New York, individuals convicted of crimes are normally required to have face-to-face presentence interviews with probation officials and are not permitted to have their lawyers present. Blanche initially hesitated, but ultimately Merchan allowed him to observe Trump’s interview. Public defenders in the city raised concerns about preferential treatment for Trump and called on the probation department to ensure equal opportunities for all New Yorkers during the pre-sentencing process. The city’s public defender organizations stated that everyone who has been convicted of a crime should have the right to have legal representation present during their probation interview, not just wealthy individuals.
