FACT-CHECK: Did 37 Candidates Running Against Mexico’s New President Claudia Sheinbaum All Get Assassinated?

[[{“value”:”Talk about a crazy story!
I first saw this circulating around yesterday and I could n’t believe it was true, so I had to do my own Fact- Checking…. the kind of person who cares about facts and not merely promotes an agenda like the” Facebook Fact- Checkers” as the “real kind” does.
So I did, and I’ll let you know what the results are in a moment; they might not be what you think they will.
But first, let’s take a moment to consider that Mexico really elected a woman as president.
In fact, it’s Mexico’s second woman President, but that’s ancient.
Not only that, but she’s also Jewish as you might surmise from the heavily Jewish name” Sheinbaum” …. although she “plays down” her heritage:
I wo n’t give judgment on any of that, but I must admit that I never would have anticipated Mexico to choose a Jewish woman as their next leader.
Or should I say” El Presidenté”!
Wait, or is that” La Presidente”?
Can someone please explain this in the comments section below?
Anyways, back to our story….
I never would have anticipated that Mexico would choose a Israeli woman as their future leader, though they might not! At least, that is, if reports of 37 other candidates being assassinated is correct.
37!
Let that sink in.
But, is that real?
Also, I’ll start with Dom Lucre’s Tweet which is the first I saw of the news:
BREAKING: Mexico’s novel President Claudia Sheinbaum is going viral for winning the’ Mexican Presidential Hunger Games.’ President Sheinbaum won her election by overcoming the miracle of never being touched or targeted while 37 different candidates were killed.

But Dom, is he really looking for people to click and click?
Well, you can see he has a Community Note added, which we will get to in a moment, but the story is true in some ways.
Below is Yahoo News:
After a terrible election campaign that saw 37 candidates assassinated, Claudia Sheinbaum was elected Mexico’s first female president. https ://t.co/9MQk36VyW2
— Yahoo Canada News ( @YahooCanadaNews ) June 3, 2024
Following the most bloody election campaign in present Mexico’s history, Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as the country’s first female president on Sunday.
According to data from Integralia, a security consultancy, more than 30 candidates were killed, including a local government candidate in northern Puebla state, killing a candidate who was killed on Friday. This number rises to 37 more people killed than the vote scheduled for Sunday, according to information obtained by Reuters from Integralia.
Across the country, there were more than 20, 000 positions to fill and 70, 000 candidates vying for the spots.
Why is this election so critical?
Violence was one of the main topics in the national election this year. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the president’s replacement, has been held accountable for the consistently great murder rate, with his supporters demanding change.
Drug cartels will probably try to compel voters to vote for their favorite candidates, according to security analyst David Saucedo.
Cartels are becoming extremely dangerous — they’re then well- armed and socially influential. According to a report translated by NPR, more than 30, 000 people are murdered each year in Mexico, compared to around 18, 500 in the U. S. in 2023.
Ok, so today let’s examine the Community Note and see what they are saying:
Grok truly confirms that to be true.
But let’s sum it all up….
Yes, it’s true that 37 candidates in the election were assassinated or killed, which is absolutely beautiful in itself. But none of those 37 were running for President, they were running for another offices.
But, is the headline correct?
No simply.
And unwaveringly refrain from implying that Claudia Sheinbaum, the president-elect, committed that murder.”}]] [[{“value”:”

What a wild tale!
I saw this yesterday and couldn’t believe that it was true. So I did my own fact-checking …., the kind that actually cares about facts and isn’t just pushing an agenda, like “Facebook Fact Checkers”.
So I did, and I’ll tell you the results in a few moments — they might not be what I expected!
Let’s pause for a moment and remember that Mexico just elected its first woman president.
It’s the first female president of Mexico, which is historic.
Not only that, but she’s also Jewish as you might surmise from the heavily Jewish name “Sheinbaum”….although she “plays down” her heritage:

I don’t want to make any value judgements about any of that. But I have to admit I never expected Mexico to elect an Israeli woman as their next president.
Should I say “El Presidente”?
Is that “La Présidente” or “La Présidente?”
Can you educate me on the following?
Back to our story ….
I never expected Mexico to elect an orthodox Jewish woman as its next president …..and perhaps they didn’t. If reports of 37 assassinations are true, then Mexico may have elected a Jewish woman as their next President.
37!
Let that sink in.
Is that true?
I’ll begin with Dom Lucre’s tweet, which was the first news I saw:

BREAKING NEWS: Mexico’s new president Claudia Sheinbaum has gone viral after winning the ‘Mexican Presidential Hunger Games’. Sheinbaum was able to win her election without being touched or targeted, while 37 other candidates had been assassinated.

Is Dom just trying to get attention and clicks on his site?
You can see that he has added a Community Note, which we will discuss in a moment, but this story is true in many ways.
Yahoo News is here:

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first woman president, was elected after a bloody campaign that saw 37 assassinations. https://t.co/9MQk36VyW2
— Yahoo Canada News (@YahooCanadaNews) June 3, 2024

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first woman president, was elected Sunday after the most violent election campaign in modern history.
Reuters obtained data from Integralia, a security consultancy, that showed more than 30 candidates had been assassinated. This included a candidate for a local government in central Puebla who was killed Friday. The total number of people killed has now reached 37 ahead of the Sunday vote.
There were more than 20,000 vacant positions across the country and 70,000 applicants vying for them.
Why is this election important?
The issue of violent crime was one of the most important issues in this year’s presidential election. The murder rate has been high for many years, and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s opponents have argued for change.
According to David Saucedo, a security analyst with the Associated Press, drug cartels are likely to try to force voters to vote for their preferred candidates.
Cartels are becoming more dangerous. They’re well-armed and have political influence. According to a NPR report, Mexico will have more than 30,000 murders per year, compared with the U.S. at 18,500.

Now let’s look at the Community Note to see what they have to say:

Grok confirms that this is true ….

Let’s summarize ….
It’s true, 37 candidates were assassinated in the election, which is a shocking fact in and of itself. They were not running for the presidency, but for other offices.
Is the headline true?
Not exactly.
It is not true to say that La Presidenta Elect Claudia Sheinbaum killed that person.
