Leading up to the face-off in Atlanta on Thursday, Trump has changed his approach from downplaying Biden’s abilities to acknowledging him as a “competent debater.” In the meantime, his Republican supporters have been spreading unfounded rumors that Biden will be using performance-enhancing drugs in order to participate in the event. Haberman explained to CNN’s “Situation Room” that Trump has a habit of framing situations in a way that ensures he is not held responsible if things do not go well, by suggesting that the system is rigged against him. It shows that Trump understands the importance of performing well in the debate and for Biden to perform poorly, according to Haberman. Trump has acknowledged the need to be less aggressive than he was in the previous debate and focus on presenting his vision for the country instead of airing grievances about his legal issues. Haberman believes that talking about his legal issues only brings voters’ concerns about him to the forefront. At the same time, it is crucial for Biden to demonstrate his ability to withstand the demands of a presidential campaign and address doubts about his age in order to emerge victorious in the debate, she stated. Biden, who is currently 82 years old and would be 87 by the end of a potential second term, is the oldest president in U.S. history. Haberman emphasized the importance of Biden demonstrating his ability to remain standing for an extended amount of time during an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. He essentially has to repeat his State of the Union speech.
