A man who received a 30-year federal prison sentence for assaulting former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s spouse has been found guilty of aggravated kidnapping, which carries a life sentence without parole. A San Francisco jury also convicted David DePape of first-degree burglary, false imprisonment of an elderly person, threatening a relative of a public figure, and obstructing a witness. The state trial recently resulted in additional charges being brought against DePape, 44, weeks after he was sentenced by a federal judge for the 2022 attack on Paul Pelosi. Pelosi’s office stated in an email on Friday that they continue to admire the bravery of Pelosi’s father, which was evident throughout the trial, just as it was when he saved his own life during the attack. For almost two years, Mr. Pelosi has shown remarkable bravery and strength throughout his healing process. Adam Lipson, the public defender for DePape, expressed his disappointment with the verdict and intends to challenge it through an appeal. He described the prosecutors’ choice to press charges of kidnapping for ransom as “vengeful.” “It’s truly disappointing that it was billed in such a manner.” Lipson described it as a classic case of vindictive prosecution.
