From 9 News:
We later discovered that the tire was blowing up, and it was like a loud pop. But at the time, we kind of had no idea like, did we run over something”? According to Julianna Donadio, a passenger on the Phoenix flight that is coming to see her mother.
The pilots made an emergency landing after Southwest Airlines confirmed that the tire had failed. The pilot informed air traffic control about the unknowable nature of the damage and requested firetrucks on the runway, which prompted an emergency declaration, according to an audio obtained by 9NEWS from Live Air Traffic.
Donadio explained how the cabin’s chaos was caused by a tire blowout that had damaged the mechanical system.
She said,” All of a sudden, we saw the flight attendants running… turning all the lights on inside the plane and them warning us we might have an emergency landing and we must prepare for a crash.”
Unsure if the plane might catch fire upon landing, the flight attendants began setting up the exit rows and making sure passengers were prepared to deploy the slides if needed.
” A lot of passengers were crying and screaming … There was certainly a moment I was like, OK, I may die on this flight, and I know other passengers around me felt the same way”, Donadio said.
Relief was felt when the pilot addressed the passengers over the intercom.

“It was a loud bang, which we later discovered was the tire blowing. At the time, we didn’t know if we had run over anything, said Julianna Donadio. She was a passenger on a flight to Phoenix to visit her mother.
Southwest Airlines confirmed the tire failure, which led the pilots to declare a landing emergency. 9NEWS obtained audio from Live Air Traffic that revealed the pilot informed airtraffic control about the undetermined extent of the damage, and requested firetrucks to be on the runway. This led to an emergency declaration.
Donadio explained the chaos that ensued in the cabin by explaining that the tire blowout compromised the hydraulic system.
She said that this is the moment that she keeps replaying in her mind. “All of a suddenly, we saw the flight crew run… turning on all the lights inside the plane. They told us we might be having an emergency landing. We have to prepare for a crash,”
Flight attendants, not knowing if a fire would break out during landing, began preparing the exit rows. They also made sure that passengers were prepared to deploy the slide if needed.
“A lot passengers were crying and screamed… There was definitely an instant I thought, OK, I might die on this plane, and I knew fellow passengers around me also felt the same,” Donadio explained.
