However, a Republican suggested that Democrats are hoping for Trump’s assassination by pushing for this action, despite the bills not having a high chance of passing in the near future. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) introduced a bill after leading the House committee that examined the January incident. On January 6, 2021, there was a failed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. “I was unsatisfied with the way the president behaved during his time in office.” He endangered the lives of many people. Thompson informed HuffPost that she noticed that, but questioned why someone would want to defend a criminal. According to the law, Trump, as a former president, is entitled to various benefits after leaving office, such as a yearly pension equivalent to a White House cabinet official’s salary ($246,400), a travel allowance, office space and personnel, and notably, Secret Service protection for him and his spouse. Thompson’s proposed bill, introduced in April, aims to terminate Secret Service protection for an individual when they are convicted of a state or federal crime with a minimum punishment of one year in prison. None of Trump’s other post-presidency benefits would be impacted. Ad. Rep.
