With the arrival of Hurricane Beryl as an “extremely dangerous ” category 4 storm, Vincent and the Grenadines ( SVG ) has criticized the lack of political will in Western Europe and the US to address the global climate crisis. Speaking from his residence in SVG on Monday, Ralph Gonsalves described the unfolding catastrophe as the “monster ” storm ripped off rooftops, including that of the 204-year-old St George’s Anglican cathedral in the country ’s capital, Kingstown. “We have no electricity, and while I am talking to you, the rain is beating on the standard prime minister ’s residence, and the winds are howling. And it ’s going to get much worse, ” he said. “The getting hours are going to be awful. ” Heavy rain and gale-force winds downed power lines, smashed vehicles, and forced thousands into shelters. Aluminum roofing sheets gliding through the air in videos posted on social media. In a statement later Monday, Gonsalves said that on Union Island, 90 percent of houses had lost their roofs or been seriously damaged. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned that there might be even worse and called Beryl “life-threatening.” In only 42 hours, Beryl grew from a tropical depression to a major hurricane, a development just six times before in Atlantic hurricane history. By Sunday morning, countries across the eastern Caribbean, including SVG, Barbados, Grenada, and St Lucia, had been put on hurricane watch. A full-blown state of emergency declaration was issued on some islands before the holidays, with curfews and travel restrictions. “For the big emitters of greenhouse gases, those who contribute most to global warning, you are getting a lot of talking, but you are not seeing a lot of action. Beryl has also halted flights and forced the suspension of significant regional events, including the St. Vincent Carnival celebrations and the 20-nation Caribbean Community ( Caricom ) leaders ‘ summit, which was scheduled for this week in Grenada. According to scientists, warming oceans give rise to the most powerful and harmful tropical storms because they are more powerful and powerful at the same time as humans. With the winds howling in the background, Gonsalves said: “For the big emitters of greenhouse gases, those who contribute most to global warning, you are getting a lot of talking, but you are not seeing a lot of action—as in making money available to small-island developing states and other vulnerable countries. I am optimistic that what is happening, which is approaching hurricane season, will alert them to our flaws and weaknesses, and will encourage them to uphold the commitments they have made on a range of issues, from the Paris accord to the present. SVG, which is also recovering from a significant volcanic eruption in 2021, and Grenada, are both bearing the brunt of Hurricane Beryl. After the storm made landfall in Carriacou, one of the islands of Grenada, officials said they had received “reports of devastation”. Gonsalves referred to COP, the annual UN climate change conference, as “largely a talk shop”. He also cited the UK election campaign as an illustration of the lack of social will in terms of climate change. He said: “Climate change is no playing any significant part in the campaigns. It is not at the heart of the messages the main parties are sending to the American people, for the simple reason that it is not an election winner in any way, even though one or two members of the Labour Party talk about it and some Greens have concerns about it. In addition to the election, the similar thing is happening in various regions of Western Europe and the United States as countries shift to the right. It’s a bad time for small-island developing states and vulnerable countries. ” This article was first published by the Guardian, and it is now available these as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. As a result of Hurricane Beryl’s landfall, which the St. Vincent and the Grenadines ‘ ( SVG ) prime minister described as “extremely dangerous” category 4 and a lack of political will in Western Europe and the US to address the global climate crisis, the prime minister of the region ( SVG ) has condemned this country’s response.
