Reuters reports
James Inhofe of Oklahoma, a Republican who was a mainstay in the ideological right of the U.S. Congress, a champion of American military power, and a skeptic of the idea that human activity caused climate change, died Tuesday at the age of 89. He scoffed at the notion that humans were responsible for climate change, and fought against environmental regulations.
Tulsa World, an Oklahoma newspaper, reported his death citing family sources. It said that services are still pending.
Inhofe, an avid pilot, flew around the globe in 1991 following the route taken by aviation pioneer Wiley Post six decades earlier.
He was the former mayor of Tulsa in Oklahoma, the second largest city. He spent eight years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, before being elected to Senate in 1994. He retired in 2023, at age 88, as the oldest and longest-serving U.S. Senator from Oklahoma. He said he was suffering long-term COVID-19 effects.
Inhofe was known as one of the conservativest U.S. Senators, and for his caustic barbs directed at political and ideological opponents.
During his tenure as the chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee he was an influential Republican on climate-change issues.
In a press release from December 2020, Sen. James Lankford announced that he and Inhofe had received the experimental COVID-19 shots.
Inhofe said, “Today, I received the COVID-19 vaccination from the Office of the Attending Doctor as part of the continuity of the government protocol and to show my confidence in the vaccine’s safety.”
“I am confident in its safety, efficacy and effectiveness. I urge all Oklahomans to get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available. “Any funding bill must include resources for distribution so that the vaccine reaches our frontline health workers and all Americans,” added he.
