According to a spokesperson for Spartz, she “accidentally carried an unoccupied handgun with no magazines or bullets” in her suitcase, according to a NBC News spokesman.

A section of Virginia law, which prohibits the “possess or transport” of a gun or a variety of different hazardous weapons, is cited by the spokesperson, who said Spartz was charged Friday. The statute classifies the violation as a misdemeanor.
The citation, according to a spokesperson for Spartz, was issued prior to her scheduled arrival for Romania for a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly.
Rep. Spartz unintentionally carried an unoccupied handgun in her suitcase while going through security at Dulles Airport next Friday, according to a spokesperson who responded to a request for comment on Monday.
According to CBS News, the Transportation Security Administration ( TSA ) said the weapon “was unloaded and in the individual’s carry- on bag”.

The spokesperson said that Spartz was charged on Friday. She cited a section in Virginia law relating to the dangerous use or firearms and other weapons. The statute makes it illegal to “possess” or “transport” a gun, or a number of other dangerous weapons, “into any airport terminal of an air carrier.”
A spokesperson for Spartz stated that the citation was issued prior to her international flight for a meeting for Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly which took place in Romania.
“Last week, Rep. Spartz accidentally had an empty handgun with no magazine in her suitcase while going through Dulles airport security,” the spokesperson responded in a response to a comment request on Monday.
According to CBS News the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the weapon “was unloaded in the individual’s carry on bag.”

The 45-year old Noblesville resident represents Indiana’s 5th Congressional District. The district includes Hamilton County as well as other counties north and east of Indianapolis.
She is running for re-election at the November election. She defeated eight rivals during the Republican primary in May, just months after deciding to run for re-election. Her campaign focused on her opposition to sending assistance to her native Ukraine. She is the only Ukrainian-born U.S. House of Representatives member.
Spartz was not the only Hoosier found with a weapon at security checkpoints in Washington airports last Friday.

In a TSA press release, it is stated that “Guns will not be allowed through the security checkpoint. The traveler will face a stiff financial penalty from TSA.” The maximum penalty for carrying weapons is $15,000
