Brendan Carr, a Federal Communications Commission commissioner, called free speech fundamental and essential for solving America’s problems.
Carr stated that censorship does not affect only those who Big Tech has censored, but everyone.
He stated that the problem with censorship was that censors can be biased or fallible, but that all of us are at risk. “[T]he best way to solve problems as a nation was through open, robust, live debates. We’ve lost that tradition, and I don’t think that’s a good thing.”
The FCC commissioner pointed out that censorship justifications often have cultural roots.
He said, “That’s a cultural problem in this country, get back to this embrace diversity of views, since it’s how to solve difficult problems.”
Carr used COVID-19 to illustrate his point.
Carr stated, “We should have an open, robust debate about, for example, mask efficacy.” “Do cloth masks work? The origins of COVID and the effectiveness of vaccines in terms transmitting or not These are important public health and public policy issues that, for most of the time these debates take places, the internet doesn’t allow you to even have them.
Carr also suggested some possible solutions to increase freedom of speech and accountability in Big Tech.
He suggested that tech companies should be more transparent about their content moderation decisions, and that users should be able hold companies accountable for censorship. Carr also advocated anti-viewpoint discrimination provisions, and user-empowered moderation.
He stated, “Right now all those content moderation decision are being made by Silicon Valley. So I think we need to have user empowerment.” “The speech should be allowed and anyone can see it if they want to.”
Carr explained how he hopes these reforms will impact speech. “I believe that is going be central to diversity of thought.
