Democrat Wes Moore Wins in Deep Blue Maryland

Thursday’s CBS Mornings continued the liberal gloating following Tuesday’s midterms results. This included the age-old tradition of celebrating diversity victories. Gayle King, a Democratic donor and co-host, marveled at Wes Moore’s win for the governor’s mansion. It was a “historic victory” for deep-blue Maryland.

“Ahead, one the big election winners of the Democrats, we will speak to Maryland’s Governor-elect that’s Wes Moore regarding his historic victory, and his plans for his next four years,” King said in a tease about Moore, who, like King, is where she’s at thanks to one person: Oprah.

She swooned at Moore, describing him as “a political newcomer”, who “scored an important win” with a campaign on “issues like creating equal opportunity and ending childhood poverty” and “victory Speech…about maintaining hope even in the face of cynicism.”

King added a “wow” to her boasts and invited him to “take me in the moment” when it became clear that he had won. And “what did that feel to you?”

King stated that he was “excited” about Maryland’s “moment to be bold and go fast. King then added another softball: “Talking bold, Wes, but this is your first public office. This is your first public office. This job seems very ambitious.

Tony Dokoupil, co-host, was similarly captivated: “Well Governor, no one chooses a resume. But you’ve got quite the resume, Johns Hopkins University. Rhodes Scholar to Oxford. 82nd Airborne. A Captain, a paratrooper. Combat action in Afghanistan.

Instead of going down that path, he asked the last question about crime to gently ask: “[C]rime has been on people’s minds these day, at the very minimum, the perception of criminality, not just in Maryland but across the country, is really, really high right currently. How will you tackle it?

Moore responded that the state needed “urgency” to address the fact that “third” of violent criminals are in violation probation and parole.

King got one more taste of chumminess before he went to break

Wes, you are making a lot people believe. Please tell your beautiful wife on Instagram that it says “[p]roud spouse of Maryland gubernatorial candidates.” She must change that. She must change that. Wes Moore, congratulations! This won’t be our last conversation, I’m sure.

Gag.

[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE] Maryland’s Next Leader: Wes Moore on His Historic Gubernatorial Victory, and Challenges Ahead

KING: A political newcomer made Maryland history by running for Governor. His name is Wes Moore. He is a Democrat and won decisively over Republican Dan Cox. His victory speech was about keeping hope alive in the face of cynicism. He campaigned for issues such as creating equal opportunity and ending childhood poverty. Wes Moore will be Maryland’s first Black Governor. He is also the third Black Governor elected in US history. Wow. Wes Moore joins us now. Good morning Governor-to-be, and congratulations. It’s great to see you, Wes Moore.

GOVERNOR-ELECT WES MoORE (D-MD),: Thank you. Good morning. It’s a pleasure to meet you.

GAYLE KING: We were watching that night. We are excited that you’re here Wes. We were watching that night. I want you to join us now. Where were you? How did you find out that you were the next Governor for Maryland? What was that like for you?

MOORE: It was amazing. I can recall being in the war room with all the cameras. The team was crunching numbers, and the polls closed around eight. We were then watching some of the other results come in. My campaign manager raised his hand and said, “Hold on.” The room erupted after he said, “We just got word, we just won.” The best part was when the numbers started coming in, it was how we won. We were winning in urban, rural, and suburban areas. We just won the State — Democrats, Independents and we took a large swath from Republicans. It was exciting that the State spoke with one voice. We were tired of being at each others throats. We were tired of caring more about the originator of the idea than whether it was a good idea. But, we were excited that this would be Maryland’s chance to be bold and fast. And we will do it together. It was a great night.

KING: Talk bold, Wes. This is your first public office. This is your first public office. This job seems very ambitious.

MOORE: I want this job because I know that it will allow us to tackle the challenges that I have been working on my whole life. I can tell you, I have been a public servant most of my life. I commanded soldiers in combat with 82nd Airborne Division. I founded a small business that helped first-generation students get to college. I also managed one of the largest poverty-fighting organizations in America. I also know that if we don’t address the system that allows people to slip through the cracks, we will just be cleaning up the mess that is left by broken systems. So, although I have been a public servant most of my life, I have not been a politician. I know the approach I will take to these problems: working collaboratively, working across industries, and working across political parties to achieve big things. This is exactly the approach I intend to take as Maryland’s next governor.

TONY DOKOUPIL – Governor, no one votes for a resume. But you have quite a resume. Johns Hopkins University, Rhodes Scholar Oxford, 82nd Airborne. A Captain, a paratrooper, combat action, Afghanistan. What did you think it was about? Let me tell you, I think it was about crime. Not only in Maryland but all across the country. How will you tackle it?

MOORE: I believe we need to move with urgency. You know, I was actually on the campaign trail this year because I spoke at the vigil for a grandmother aged 69 who was a member my church in East Baltimore. He was working as a custodian in that church when she was killed in the bathroom. She was a grandmother of 69. This is happening, and it is evident in communities across the State. But, the truth is that we need partnership from Maryland, where a third all violent criminals are in violation probation and parole. We know who they are. We continue to allow violent offenders to be on the streets. This is something that the State can address. This is something the State can do to address. I remember feeling handcuffs on the wrist for the first time at 11 years old. I can’t believe that anyone would have told me that I would one day be the Governor of Maryland or Governor of this State. We have to ensure that our children believe in a hope or a promise that is beyond their reach right now. This means that we must know that they won’t arrest us or militarize our way to solve these problems.

KING: Well, Wes. You’re making a lot people believe. Please tell your beautiful wife on her Instagram that it says “Proud spouse of Maryland gubernatorial candidates.” She must change that. She must change that. Wes Moore, congratulations! This won’t be our last conversation. We’ll be back.

MOORE: God Bless You!
