Gypsy Life // Scott Johnson
This short series features modern folk artists. It was started by me with recollections from Bob Feldman, Red House Records president. Bob and Marian Moore hosted the old Sunday morning Urban Folk show on KFAI. Bob’s theme song was John Gorka’s “The Gypsy Life”. Bob played the entire thing. It seems he heard the stories of the artists he loved through their eyes. It must have been more than 100 times that I listened to over the years it was on the air. I never got tired of it. It was actually something I looked forward too.
Bob released Gorka’s first album on Red House, before he moved to Windham Hill. He then signed Gorka five albums later. He is originally from the East Coast, and now resides in Minnesota in a small community on the St. Croix River. I saw that he has a show at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis this Saturday. I might have to give up my life and go check it out. Steve Hayward should be in the USA soon, in any case. I have a long list artists I have yet to see, but I am wrapping up this series today with “The Gypsy Life” by Bob Feldman. Nanci Griffith, the late Nanci Griffith, took the harmony part.
