Military Pilot Dies After Fighter Jet Crashes Near Marine Base

An F / A-18 fighter jet crashed Thursday night close to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, killing a U.S. Marine Corp pilot. A search and rescue mission ended on Friday morning after the crash was reported west of Interstate 15 just before midnight.
According to officials,” Search and rescue recovered the U.S. Marine Corps pilot who has been confirmed dead at the site.”

At this time, it is unknown what might have caused the crash. According to officials, the aircraft was a member of the Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron [ VMFA ( AW )] 224.
There are no signs of ground-based property damage.
The incident was first handled by San Diego police, but MCAS Miramar officials took over the investigation.
According to the Navy, the” F / A – 18 Hornet” became the country’s first all-weather fighter and attack aircraft and was built for conventional strike applications like interdiction and close air support without sacrificing its fighter capabilities.

The F / A-18 A-D is used in various fleet support roles, including those of the Navy Flight Demonstration Team( Blue Angles ), Marine Corps fighter attack squadrons, and U.S. Navy and Reserve Squadrons.

Until its scheduled sunset in 2030, it will act as the Marine Corps’ main bridging platform for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, according to the Navy.

A U.S. Marine Corps Pilot died after a F/A-18 fighter plane crashed near San Diego’s Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Thursday night. The crash was reported shortly before midnight east of Interstate 15; a search and rescue mission ended Friday morning.
Officials said that “Search and Rescue recovered the U.S. Marine Corps Pilot who has been confirmed dead at the site”, in a press release.

At this time, it’s unclear what caused the crash. Officials confirmed Friday that the aircraft was a part of Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA (AW), 224.
There is no evidence of damage to the property on the ground.
San Diego police initially responded to the incident, but officials at MCAS Miramar then took over the investigation.
According to the Navy, the “F/A-18 Hornet was the nation’s very first all-weather attack and fighter aircraft. It was designed for traditional strike application such as interdiction and air support close without compromising the fighter capabilities.”

The F/A-18 A-D aircraft is used by Marine Corps fighter squadrons and U.S. Navy Reserve squadrons. It also serves in the Navy Flight Demonstration Team, or Blue Angles, and other fleet support roles.
The Marine Corps described the aircraft as “the workhorse for tactical aviation in the Marine Corps and supports operational deployments across the globe.”
The Navy said that the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will be the Marine Corps’ primary bridge platform until 2030, when it is scheduled to sunset.
