Fight misinformation by subscribing to Mother Jones Daily’s completely newsletter and keeping up with important news. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy( R-California ) is once again showing a willingness, if not outright enthusiasm, to give in to the demands of far-right members of his caucus five days after an increasingly likely government shutdown.
The Washington Post reports on the most recent developments in the spending negotiations, with McCarthy then approving significant reductions to a number of safety net programs that offer home heating assistance, former housing benefits, and food assistance for children. It’s an incredible proposal that even calls for a funding cut of up to 80 % for low-income schools and the elimination of funding for food assistance for underprivileged expectant mothers. The list is but another effort to appease the very people McCarthy claimed last week were responsible for a” whole novel concept of individuals who just want to burn things down.” McCarthy is much more comfortable with these people than he lets on, as I said this weekend.
Will these most recent concessions persuade his shattered party to cooperate? Who is to say? McCarthy’s plans are useless when he gets to the Senate and the White House, demonstrating that the leading Republican is unconcerned about avoiding a shutdown, regardless of his ability to turn the far right. However, despite of how the negotiations turn out, McCarthy’s eagerness to abuse some of the most vulnerable members of society should not be overlooked. Republicans are still advocating for cutting programs that aid the weak despite all the talk of a new GOP.

Five days in advance of a likely federal shutdown, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is once again illustrating a willingness – or even an eagerness – to give into the demands of the ultraconservatives in his faction. The Washington Post discloses the newest findings from the budget talks, with McCarthy now maintaining drastic reshuffles to various safety net facilities that supply food aid for offspring, aid for veteran housing, and home heating aid. It’s an astounding suggestion that would entail a potential 80% decrease in finances for schools that serve lower-income households, as well as the elimination of resources for food aid for underprivileged pregnant women. This is an effort to appease those whom McCarthy had denounced just a week ago for having a “whole different attitude of people that just want to destroy things.” I stated this past weekend that the assertion was ridiculous; McCarthy knows a lot more about these individuals than he claims to. Will these newest agreements persuade his divided team to cooperate? I wonder. If McCarthy is successful in swaying the extreme conservatives, his ideas will not even make it passed the Senate and President, showing that the most influential Republican does not have any real interest in stopping a shutdown.
