Three years ago, a high-profile auction of a Ming Dynasty painting brought the world into contact with not only the most remarkable stone painting ever made, but the depth of Chinese relationship with nature. The painting was commissioned by Mi Wanzhong, a prominent official, calligrapher and collector (1570-1628). The scroll contains ten life-size depictions of a stone that Mi acquired between 1608-1610.Mi Wanzhong wrote about watching Wu Bin paint. He was as fascinated by Wu Bin as he was by Wu’s paintings. He then took up an old piece of paper and painted the stone from both the front and back. However, he wasn’t finished with his painting. He continued to paint the left and the right sides but the painting wasn’t finished. He painted the left and right sides, the front and back, diagonally. [Wu] completed ten views by combining the bottom view from the front and back.
