Good News in History, October 27

One man, in the right place at the right moment, did the right thing 61 years ago, saving the world, most likely, from nuclear war. Vasily Arkhipov, during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, is known as “the man who saved the World” when he stood the other two officers on the Soviet submarine B-59 down over the decision of launching a nuclear salvo against the U.S. Navy. READ how it occurred… Vasili Arkhipov CC SA 4.0. Olga ArkhipovOn the 27th of October 1962, during Cuban Missile Crisis a group consisting of 11 destroyers from the United States Navy and the aircraft carrier USS Randolph found the diesel-powered nuclear-armed submarine B59 near Cuba. The United States Navy dropped depth charges to force the submarine B-59 to surface. This was despite the fact that it was in international waters. The crew of the submarine did not know if war had started, but American vessels were dropping depth charges near their ship. The Soviet B-59 of Arkhipov was the only one against the launch. Arkhipov persuaded Savitsky that he should surface and wait for orders from Moscow. His persuasion prevented a nuclear conflict that would have occurred if the nuclear weapon was fired. Arkhipov continued to serve in the Navy and eventually reached the position of Rear-Admiral. In a 2012 PBS documentary titled “The Man Who Saved the World”, his wife Olga described Arkhipov as intelligent, polite and very calm. In 2002, Russian officials declassified the fact that the B-59 was carrying nuclear torpedoes and Arkhipov’s actions were the reason they weren’t used. Arkhipov was awarded the first “Future of Life Award” in 2017 for his actions aboard B-59.

The film was banned from New Zealand and Spain because of its appealing personality and acting skills. Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo and Nicholas Ray, the director, were all nominated as Oscar winners.
