Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) first major bill, however, will likely encounter considerable resistance on both sides of the aisle within the Senate, with even Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) dissenting. For weeks, McConnell has been strongly advocating for a comprehensive national security appropriation that would help drive back countries like Russia, China, and Iran. Legislators in the Senate who have affiliations with traditional organizations are agreeing with the stance taken by McConnell and several leading Democrats, including President Joe Biden. Sen. Pat Roberts stated that he believed it was a major error to try and separate our nation’s security interests in this situation.
