A 12-year-old student from Miller Middle School in San Jose won$ 25, 000 in a science fair for her creation of an improved fire detection system that is more effective, affordable, and dependable than smoke detectors. Shanya Gill won the Thermo Fischer Junior Innovator’s Challenge, which is reputed to be the best STEM competition in the country for end schoolers.
