Florida Republicans Vote to Strip Power From Chairman Following Rape Allegations

Florida Republicans voted today to remove Christian Ziegler from his position as chairman of the state GOP Committee, following allegations he had raped a female, according to reports. The executive board of the party voted in a closed-door emergency meeting to censure Ziegler and strip him of his authority. They also reduced his salary to just $1.

Following reports that he allegedly raped a woman, Florida Republicans voted today to successfully remove Christian Ziegler from his position as chairman of the state GOP committee. According to the Sarasota Herald- Tribune, the party’s executive board decided to censure Ziegler, strip him of his power, and lower his salary to$ 1 during an urgent, closed-door meeting. According to the Herald-Tribune, they even decided to hold a meeting in Tallahassee on January 8 where they are anticipated to vote to remove him.
The reported three-way of the Zieglers has led to accusations of hypocrisy. According to my colleague Kiera Butler, who has been covering the alleged Ziegler scandal, the chairman has consistently refused to resign from his position despite accusations that he and his wife Bridget, a previous Sarasota school board chair and co-founder of the powerful organization Moms for Liberty, had raped the woman. The” Do n’t Say Gay” bill, which forbids teachers in the state from discussing same-sex relationships in most contexts, was pushed by the parents ‘ rights group, who also called for the removal of sexually explicit material from school libraries. Unsurprisingly, some Floridians have accused the Zieglers of being hypocritical as a result of their admitted three-way, as Kiera has reported. Bridget Ziegler has even steadfastly refused to leave her position on the school board. Christian Ziegler has denied the accusations, which were initially reported by the Florida Center for Government Accountability, an investigative journalism outlet. Mother Jones was unable to freely confirm the claims. The Herald-Tribune reports that the Sarasota Police Department is looking into the allegations. Christian Ziegler was present at the meeting on Sunday, according to the local newspaper, and he expressed regret for the party’s scrutiny in the wake of his scandal. Following reports that he allegedly raped a woman, Florida Republicans voted today to successfully remove Christian Ziegler from his position as chairman of the state GOP committee.
