This confession came via a court document made public on Friday in a Manhattan federal court. The document was unsealed following an earlier request from a judge asking an attorney to justify the citation of non-existent court rulings in a motion presented on behalf of Cohen. Judge Jesse Furman also inquired about Cohen’s involvement, if any, in preparing the motion. Advertisement. The AI-created incidents were referenced in written justifications a lawyer utilized in an attempt to prematurely terminate Cohen’s court monitoring after he spent over a year in prison. In 2018, Cohen confessed to tax evasion, breach of campaign finance regulations, and misleading Congress. He stated that Trump instructed him to manage a hush money payment to a porn star and a previous Playboy model to prevent harm to his 2016 presidential campaign. Cohen, who lost his legal license five years prior, stated in court documents submitted on Thursday that he discovered the citations by researching on Google Bard. He claimed to be unaware that the service could create fake cases. He stated that he utilizes the internet for research purposes as he no longer has the reach to official legal-research resources. “Since I am not a lawyer, I haven’t been updated on the progressing trends, and the associated risks, in the field of legal technology. I was unaware that Google Bard, like Chat-GPT, is a text generation service that can display quotations and descriptions appearing authentic but are not, in reality,” Cohen conveyed. Rather, I perceived it as an enhanced search engine and have continually utilized it in various situations to reliably locate correct information on the internet. He accused his attorney and lifelong companion David Schwartz of not verifying the accuracy of his references prior to presenting them to the judge. However, he requested the judge to be lenient with Schwartz, mentioning his failure to verify the references as an “unintentional error” and “a result of inattention, not any deliberate deception.”.
