” A recent EWG peer-reviewed study has discovered chlormequat, a little-known pesticide, in four out of five, or 80 %, of people tested.” The Environmental Working Group ( EWG ) stated that the groundbreaking analysis of chlormequat in human bodies raises concerns because it is associated with reproductive and developmental issues in animal studies and may potentially cause similar harm to humans.

According to The New York Post:
According to the EWG, it is legally permitted to use the “highly dangerous agricultural chemical” on oats and additional grains imported into the US. According to the EWG, chlormequat changes a plant’s growth when used on oat and grain crops, preventing it from bending over and making harvesting simpler.
In a report released alongside the group’s findings, the nonprofit organization stated that” Just as troubling, we detected the chemical in 92 % of oat-based foods purchased in May 2023, including Quaker Oats and Cheerios.”
Requests for comment were n’t immediately answered by General Mills, which makes Cheerios, and PepsiCo, who makes Quaker Oats.
Another especially troubling finding is that the EWG’s tests “found higher levels and more frequent detections of chlormequat in the 2023 samples… which suggests consumer exposure to CHMEQUT could be on the rise” after testing for its presence in semen collected from 96 people between 2017.
Chlormequat, a little-known pesticide, was found in 80 % of examined subjects in an EWG peer-reviewed study. This is concerning because studies on animals have linked the chemical to issues with reproductive and developmental issues. t.co/Oh6Rue6KZq

EWG penned:
Chlormequat was tested for in urine taken from 96 people between 2017 and 2023 in EWG’s study, which was published on February 15 in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology. 77 of them had urine containing the chemical.
When compared to samples from 2017 through 2022, our tests found higher levels and more numerous chlormequat detections in the 2023 samples, which raises the possibility that consumer exposure to the substance is increasing.
We found the chemical in 92 percent of oat-based foods bought in May 2023, including Quaker Oats and Cheerios, which is equally disturbing. Since animal studies link chlormequat to decreased fertility, harm to the reproductive system, and altered prenatal growth, the fact that so many people are exposed raises concerns about its potential impact on public health.
According to Environmental Protection Agency regulations, the chemical may only be used on ornate plants grown in the United States and not on food crops, but it is allowed on imported oats and other foods sold around. Some oats and their products are imported from Canada and consumed in the United States.

The groundbreaking analysis of the presence of chlormequat on the bodies of Americans is alarming, as the chemical has been linked to reproductive and development problems in animal studies. The New York Post reports on:
According to the EWG, federal law allows the use of the “highly toxic agriculture chemical” on grains and oats imported into the US. The EWG reports that when chlormequat is applied to grain and oat crops, it alters the plant’s growth and prevents it from bending, making it easier to harvest.
The nonprofit group said that the chemical was found in 92% of the oat-based products purchased in May 2023. This included Quaker Oats and Cheerios.
General Mills (which makes Cheerios) and PepsiCo (which makes Quaker Oats) didn’t immediately reply to requests for comments.
The EWG found that the detection of chlormequat was higher and more frequent in 2023 urine samples, which indicates that consumer exposure to the drug could be on the increase.

Our tests revealed higher levels of chlormequat and more frequent detections in 2023 samples compared to those collected from 2017 to 2022. This suggests that consumer exposure to the chemical could be increasing.

Environmental Protection Agency regulations only allow the chemical to used on ornamental plants – not food crops. However, it is allowed to be used on imported oats as well as other foods sold in the U.S. Many of the oats, oat products and oat flours consumed in the U.S. are from Canada.
