After residents voiced concerns about fluoride’s prospective harms, Union County commissioners voted 3- 2 on February 19th to stop adding it to the water supply.
Commissioners were informed by Abigail Prado, the chapter leader for Moms for Liberty Union County, that fluoride in drinking water can impair a gestating child’s academic growth.
Prado cited a 2019 JAMA Pediatrics study that found that children between the ages of 3 and 4 had lower IQ scores when their mothers were exposed to higher fluoride levels during pregnancy. These results suggest a potential need to lower fluoride intake while pregnant.
According to Prado,” I’m here now to present the board with evidence that fluoride is a well-known neurotoxin in the medical community as well as the results of an investigation that found that drinking water from public sources can significantly harm gestating children’s IQs when consumed by pregnant mothers.”
She continued,” Millions of pregnant women are already exposed to fluoride levels that have the ability to lower their children’s IQ by at least four to six points.”

According to a 2019 study published in JAMA Pediatrics, high fluoride exposure while pregnant may impair the intellectual growth of the unborn child, “indicating the potential need to reduce salt intake during pregnancy.” The study had a number of limitations, the researchers added.
For instance, the participant’s home tap water did not actually have a fluoride concentration as measured by their intake. Additionally, the mothers ‘ self-reported recall of daily beverage consumption constrained the data on fluoride intake.
Union County Commissioner Richard Helms stated that he had to support health professionals in this debate as well as the personal experience of his personal children when it came time for a vote.
” I believe that the history of the United States in which fluoride intake was kept to a minimum has improved the quality of life for our young people.” I can tell you that I grew up near a also, and when I started subsisting on fluoride-containing water, my medical issues sort of subsided. Helms said. ” I wo n’t support a resolution to get rid of fluoride, and I’d ask my peers to do the same.”
But, Commissioner David Williams argued that consumers should be able to select the ingredients in their water.
Williams said, according to NC Newsline,” There are a number of chemicals that are added to the water, but those chemicals are also added in order to treat it, making it safe to drink in some cases, to remove or address odor concerns, or drinkability.”
You are aware that the water is not treated with any of those additional chemicals. Fluoride is the sole exception. To treat us, fluoride is added to the water, and I believe that should cause us to pause, he continued.

The vote was cast on Monday after a group of concerned citizens, known as the” Fluoride Fighters,” expressed concern over fluoridide’s potential negative effects, such as lowering IQ levels in children, and claimed that the county was violating their right to medical freedom by fluorinating its water.
Williams expressed his agreement that people should have the freedom to select what is put in their water before the vote.
Give people the freedom to make their own decisions instead of putting something that is intended to treat us in the water. You know, what a wonderful idea! he remarked.
Brian Helms, who also voted in favor of the proposal, stated that he did n’t think the board should disregard residents ‘ medical preferences.

Union County commissioners voted on February 19th, 3-2, to stop adding fluoride into the water supply. Residents had expressed concerns over fluoride’s potential harmful effects.
Abigail Prado of the Moms for Liberty Union County Chapter told commissioners that the fluoride content in drinking water could affect the intellectual development a child during pregnancy.
Prado cited a study published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2019 that stated, “maternal exposition to higher levels fluoride during the pregnancy was associated with a lower IQ score in children aged between 3 and 4 years.” These findings suggest that fluoride intake may need to be reduced during pregnancy.
Prado said, “I am here tonight to present evidence that fluoride has been identified as a neurotoxin by the scientific community. I will also present a study that found that drinking public water contaminated with fluoride can cause significant IQ loss in children during pregnancy when consumed by mothers.”
She added that “millions of pregnant women today are exposed to fluoride levels that could lower their child’s IQ at least by four to six points.”

A study published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2019 showed that increased fluoride exposure could harm a child’s intellectual development. The researchers noted, however, that the study had some limitations.
The fluoride intake data, for example, did not reflect the actual fluoride concentration of the tap water at the participant’s residence. The data on fluoride intake was limited by the self-reported beverage consumption of the mothers.
When it was time to vote, Union County commissioner Richard Helms said that he had no choice but to side with the medical professionals and his own experience.
“I believe that the United States’ history of adding fluoride at a minimal level has made the lives of our young people healthier and more enjoyable. Helms said, “I can tell you that my dental problems stopped when I moved to a fluoride-infused water source. “I will not support a resolution that removes the fluoride, and I would ask my peers to follow suit.”
David Williams, however, argued that the people should be able to choose what is in their drinking water.
Williams told NC Newsline that a number chemicals are added to the water to make it drinkable, remove odors, or improve its drinkability.
“You know that none of those other chemicals is added to the water in order to treat us. The only exception is fluoride. The water is treated with fluoride, and that should make us pause,” said he.
