The Texas Tribune reports:
State officials advise clinicians to “take the possibility of infection in people who have symptoms and a possible risk of exposure, including those who have had close contact with someone infected, contact with affected animals, or contact with unpasteurized milk from dairy farms with infections.”
Symptoms can include a fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, fatigue, eye redness, shortness of breath, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or seizures. According to the alert, health care providers who come across a person who may have the virus should immediately consult their neighborhood health department. The illness can range from mild to severe.
According to the alert, health care providers like optometrists and ophthalmologists should be aware of the potential of conjunctivitis in patients who have had exposure to disturbed animals because eye redness has been observed in these infections earlier.
In a further blow to the Texas cattle industry after thousands of dollars were lost in historic Texas wildfires, the strain, novel avian influenza A ( H5N1 ), started infecting dairy cattle last week. Dairies in Kansas and New Mexico both reported related outbreaks.

In Texas and Kansas, samples were taken and tested for influenza in March 2024. These animals, including exotic birds, cats, and dairy cows, were tested because they exhibited signs of illness. Some of the animals had favorable influenza. These samples had avian influenza A ( H5N1 ) confirmed by additional testing. This is the first time in the United States that avian influenza A ( H5N1 ) has been found in cattle. According to Texas, DSHS, including regional staff, has been working with other state and federal health departments to look into possible cases of avian influenza A ( H5N1 ) in both people and animals.

The infected person from Texas used direct contact with tired cattle and, according to the CDC, reported eye redness as their sole sign. After isolating from others and receiving an antiviral medication for the flu, they are then recovering.
This event serves as a reminder of the effectiveness of our disease surveillance systems and the need to remain vigilant, according to Brownstein.
According to the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are no concerns about the safety of the corporate milk supply at this time. Milk producers must omit milk from tired cows, and pasteurization kills flu viruses.
According to the CDC, people should refrain from exposing themselves to sick or dead animals as well as from consuming foods like fresh cheese or unpasteurized milk from ill animals.
