Petri travelled to Belgium after completing the purchase of 24 F-16 jet fighters from Denmark. The jets were made in the United States and cost 2.1 billion Kroner (approximately $300 million). The transfer of the jets has not been officially scheduled.
NATO is an alliance of European and North American countries. It currently has 32 members, including the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Spain France and Germany. According to the website, members “commit to protecting each from any threat.”
Argentina has been a major non-NATO member since 1998. This means that the country has strategic relations with the U.S. Armed Forces, despite not being a NATO full member. The “global partner” or “partner across globe” status is reserved to countries that want to cooperate with NATO, but are restricted to full membership because of treaty guidelines which state that only European nations may be invited to join fully.
Colombia is the only Latin American nation that has NATO global partner status. Iraq, Japan, South Korea and Mongolia are also countries. The key difference between global partner and ally is that countries in first category are not required by law to intervene militarily in a conflict.
