New Sexually Transmitted Infection Emerges In New York City, Form Of Ringworm

[[{“value”:”In the United States, the second case of a sexually transmitted form of ringworm has been reported.
After a 30-year-old man in New York City developed the condition, health officials issued a warning about the very deadly bacterial strain.
” Healthcare providers should be aware that Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII]TMVII ] is the latest in a group of severe skin infections to have now reached the United States”, said Dr. Avrom S. Caplan, an assistant professor in NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s dermatology department, according to the New York Post.
A case study co-authored by Caplan and published on Wednesday, which details an unexplained New Yorker who contracted TMVII.
The individual had a rash on his penis, buttocks and limbs, the New York Post noted.

USA TODAY reports:
The second case, according to a fresh JAMA Dermatology report released on Wednesday, involved a man in his 30s from New York City who reported having sex with men on trips to California and to places like England and Greece abroad and who had reportedly reported having sex with men after reporting having sex with men.
When the man returned home, according to the case study, he developed an uncomfortable dark, rash on areas including his groin, genitals and buttocks, and tests confirmed he had contracted the unusual fungus.
Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII is a drug-resistant fungus that, according to the CDC, causes skin problems in both animals and people and is spread through sexual contact.
” Cases of TMVII have been on the rise in Europe, particularly in men who have sex with men”, the New York Post noted.

From the New York Post:
According to study senior author Dr. John G. Zampella,” specialists who are romantically active, have recently traveled abroad, and report itchy areas somewhere on the body are frequently hesitant to discuss vaginal problems, physicians need to directly inquire about rashes around the groin and buttocks, especially for those who are sexually active, and have recently traveled abroad, and report itchy areas somewhere on the body.”
Zampella noted that TMVII-related infections may respond to conventional antifungal treatments, including the terbinafine ( also known as Lamisil ), but they can last months to heal.
They also may be confused with lesions caused by eczema, which may delay treatment.
Dermatologists are finding a more difficult to treat than a unique itchy and deadly skin infection that causes rashes related to TMVII.
According to the researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Trichophyton indotineae, which is common in India and was first discovered in the US next year, frequently resists terbinafine treatment.
Between May 2022 and May 2023, they analyzed data from 11 men and women who had been treated for Trichophyton indotineae in New York City hospitals.
Seven of the patients received regular doses of terbinafine.”}]] [[{“value”:”

USA TODAY Reports:
According to a JAMA Dermatology report published Wednesday, the first instance involved a New York City man in his 30s who developed ringworm (tinea) on his genitals buttocks and legs after he reported having had sex overseas with men while he was in California and England.
The man developed an itchy, red rash in his genitals, buttocks and groins when he returned home. Tests confirmed that he had contracted a rare fungus.
According to the CDC, Trichophyton Mentagrophytes Type VII is a drug-resistant fungus which causes skin diseases in humans and animals. It is spread through sexual contact.
The New York Post reported that “cases of TMVII are on the rise, especially among men who have sex exclusively with men.”

The New York Post
Dr. John G. Zampella, senior author of the study, advised that since patients are often reluctant about discussing genital issues, physicians should ask directly about rashes around groins and buttocks. This is especially important for those who have been sexually active or recently traveled abroad.
Zampella noted infections caused by TMVII may respond to standard antifungal treatments such as terbinafine, also known as Lamisil, but can take months to clear.
These lesions can also be confused with eczema lesions, which may delay the treatment.
Dermatologists are facing a greater challenge from a different contagious and itchy skin infection that causes rashes like TMVII.
Researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine said that Trichophyton Indotineae, which is common in India and was confirmed for the first time in the US in last year, often resists treatment with terbinafine.
They analyzed data on 11 men and women who were treated in NYC hospitals for Trichophyton Indotineae between May 2022 to May 2023.
Seven patients received standard doses terbinafine.
