Jones believes that” there is no reasonable prospect of a successful reorganization” of his debts, most of which stem from$ 1.5 billion awarded in defamation lawsuits, his attorneys said in a court filing late on Thursday. A court-appointed trustee would oversee Jones ‘ sale of his assets, making it impossible for him to evade paying the legal judgments under a Chapter 7 liquidation.
In response to the$ 1.5 billion order from Texas and Connecticut, Jones has been ordered to pay$ 1.5 billion to the families of 20 students and six staff members killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Bankruptcy can be used to pay back debts and legal judgments, but the judge who oversaw Jones ‘ case ruled in October that the majority of defamation verdicts cannot be legally discharged because they were the result of Jones ‘ “willful and malicious injury.”

The majority of these debts stem from $1.5 billion in defamation suits. A Chapter 7 liquidation wouldn’t allow Jones to avoid paying the legal judgements, but would offer a streamlined process for selling his assets.
Jones was ordered by courts in Texas and Connecticut to pay $1.5 billion in compensation to the families of 20 students and six employees killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012.

Chris Mattei told CNN that converting the case from Chapter 7 to Chapter 7 would expedite the end of the bankruptcies, and facilitate the liquidation Jones’s assets. This is the same reason why we moved to convert the case of his company to Chapter 7.
Jones technically does not control the Infowars business any longer, as Free Speech Systems also filed for bankruptcy protection. The business of the company has been under the supervision and control of a court-appointed restructuring officer.
Next Friday, a hearing will be held to determine the fate Free Speech Systems’ bankruptcy.
The court’s decision on Thursday will set the stage for a trustee appointed by the court to liquidate Jones’ personal assets, including his stake in Infowars.
The liquidation Jones’ assets doesn’t mean that Infowars is going to cease to exist. There are several possible outcomes. The court-appointed trustee may sell the business to a different owner.
