After losing thousands of farms over the years, House Representative Kimberly Coates pushed for the bill because she believed it would help keep Louisiana farmers upright.
She explained to WBRZ that the intention is to allow the sale of everything but ingestion.
” Right now, I do n’t plan on bringing it back for human consumption, and this was mostly for the farmers to be able to sell their milk and not just pour it out”, Coates said.
Although there are concerns that the regular tests for salmonella may not be sufficient to keep the raw milk bacteria-free, the milk will go through.
” Testing of the milk can help, but when you test today, it could have ]bacteria ] tomorrow”, Veterinarian Christine Navarre said.
Republican Governor is required to sign the legislation. to become law, Jeff Landry.

Louisiana was one of a few states with a full ban on raw milk sales, according to a website that monitors its availability for those hoping to purchase it prior to lawmakers passing Rep. Kimberly Coates ‘ ( R- Ponchatoula ) HB467 during the last regular legislative session.
The bill earned hours of open comment as it worked its way through the legislature, many of which focused on talking points that were heard on traditional media.
Members were heard mooing in the chambers when the bill passed the state House on May 31. The bill was sent to Landry’s desk June 4 for his signature.
When passed, it will require that raw milk products have a label stating that they are not intended for human consumption and that they have been pasteurized and “may contain hazardous bacteria.”

House Representative Kimberly Coates was the one who pushed the bill, believing that it would keep Louisiana farmers afloat in the wake of the loss of thousands farms over the years.
She told WBRZ that the plan is to sell everything except for ingestion.
Coates said, “Right away, I don’t intend to bring it back for human consumption. This was mainly for the farmers to have the ability to sell their milk, and not just pour out.”
Raw milk will be tested for salmonella every month, but there is concern that this may not be sufficient to ensure it is free of bacteria.
Christine Navarre, a veterinarian, said that testing the milk could help, but it is possible to find [bacteria] in the milk tomorrow.
The proposed legislation is awaiting the signature of Republican Governor. Jeff Landry will become law.
The news of the bill’s possible passage coincides with public-health agencies spreading fear about avian flu affecting dairy herds.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent an open message to state and local officials, urging them to implement measures to stop the sales of raw milk.
