Although the legislation’s text was never made public until Wednesday afternoon, lawmakers and aides were anticipating an official unveiling first on Thursday. Almost six months after the fiscal year began, Congress ‘ work on spending bills will be wrapped up by the package, which is expected to pass.
This year’s dozen spending bills were packed into two packages. The second one passed Congress two weeks prior to the agency shutdown’s approval deadline for the funds raised by the bills.
Now Congress is focused on the second, larger package, which includes about$ 886 billion for defense, about a 3 % increase from last year’s levels. Additionally, the bill provides funding for the Departments of Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, Labor, and others, with non-defense spending projected to remain relatively unchanged from the preceding year.

One of the last reversals to a possible partial government shutdown deadline of Friday may not be resolved in time, but it may not come up in time. Legislative leaders and the White House have reached an agreement on how to finance the Department of Homeland Security.
The last big sticking point in the negotiations for the six spending bills that must be passed to prevent a shutdown was funding for DHS. The details of the negotiation have n’t yet been released.
In order to meet Friday’s deadline to prevent a limited government shutdown, lawmakers can begin processing the spending package thanks to the agreement on DHS funding. According to legislative leaders, a deal has been reached on the remaining six government funding bills.
” An agreement has been reached for DHS appropriations, which will allow completion of the FY24 appropriations process”, said Speaker Mike Johnson. House and Senate committees have begun drafting the bill text, which will be ready for release and consideration by the whole House and Senate as soon as possible.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the text of the legislation was not released. However, lawmakers and aides expected an official unveiling on Thursday morning. The package is expected to pass and will conclude the work of Congress on spending bills in the current fiscal year, nearly six months after it began.
The twelve spending bills for this year were divided into two packages. The first bill was approved by Congress just two weeks ago, just hours before the shutdown deadline for agencies funded by the bills.
Congress is now focusing on the second, bigger package, which includes $886 billion in defense spending, a 3% rise from last year. The bill also funds Departments of Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, Labor and other departments, with non-defense expenditures expected to be relatively flat in comparison to the previous year.
