Reproductive Rights Advocates Close in on Abortion Ballot Measures in Missouri and South Dakota

In two states that have a near-total ban on abortion, Missouri and South Dakota organizers of reproductive rights submitted more than twice the number of signatures required to put abortions before voters. In South Dakota organizers submitted 55,000 signatures to support the ballot measure that grants a limited right of abortion, far more than the required 35,000.

In South Dakota, organizers have submitted 55, 000 signatures in support of the ballot measure granting a minimal right to abortion—far more than the 35, 000 required. In Missouri, organizers turned in 380, 159 signatures, compared to the required 172, 000, in support of a measure enshrining the” the right to reproductive freedom”. Missouri’s language is equivalent to ballot measures that passed in Ohio and Michigan.
Abortion rights advocates have won in seven of the seven ballot measures that relate to abortion since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years earlier. In almost a dozen states, organizations are urging or requesting that abortion amendments be put on the ballot this fall. Democrats are counting on these ballot measures to boost their chances, particularly in states like Florida and Arizona, where the competition is fierce.
Democratic policymakers are attempting to stop the measures from being successful in both Missouri and South Dakota.
In March, South Dakota Gov. The legislation that allows signers of ballot measures to revoke their signatures was signed by Kristi Noem, who made headlines this week for her upcoming book with false and spectacular claims. As my colleague Madison Pauly reported,” The bill is openly targeting the abortion- rights initiative. Its major sponsor, Republican Rep. Jon Hansen—who sits on the board of directors for South Dakota Best to Life—claimed to South Dakota Searchlight that people had been’ misled, or simply, improperly induced,’ into signing Dakotans for Health’s abortion rights petition”.
Legislators in Missouri are pushing for a ballot measure that would make it more difficult for upcoming ballot measures to pass. Potential ballot questions would need the overwhelming majority of voters ‘ votes in five of the eight legislative districts to prevail. According to the New York Times, “abortion rights supporters fear that the requirement would allow a minority in remote areas who are prone to oppose abortion rights to reject the amendment.””}]] Missouri and South Dakota, two states where abortion is almost entirely prohibited, both had almost double the number of signatures needed to pass ballot measures that would put abortion before voters.
