Fong, who was backed by McCarthy as well, defeated Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux in the 20th Congressional District located in California’s Central Valley agricultural region. Due to Trump’s role, the election will be closely monitored as a potential indicator of the former president’s influence as he moves towards a highly likely competition against President Joe Biden in November. Fong stated that the campaign is finished and the actual efforts are just beginning, with a focus on border security, backing small businesses, and investing in vital water storage for the area’s agriculture. Vince Fong addresses the California Assembly on April 22, 2024. The timing of Fong’s swearing-in is still uncertain, as it is up to the current House Speaker, Mike Johnson, to make that decision. There was a low voter turnout for the unique May election, which allowed mail-in voting starting last month. Trump expressed his support for Fong in February, praising him as a genuine Republican. Boudreaux has the backing of Richard Grenell, who served as the temporary head of national intelligence under Trump, as well as Republican state Sen. Only 22 of California’s 53 U.S. House seats are held by Republicans, with Shannon Grove from Bakersfield representing Fong’s district. The GOP will maintain control over the district previously held by McCarthy, expanding their total seats in the state delegation to 22. This will slightly strengthen the Republican Party’s majority in Congress by one vote. The House currently has 22 Republicans, 202 Democrats, and five vacancies, including McCarthy’s former seat. The special election only pertains to the remaining time in McCarthy’s term.
