However, activists and civil rights groups are doubtful about the assertion due to the Chicago police’s past use of violence during mass gatherings. Authorities have been preparing for maintaining security at the DNC, expecting large crowds and protests. Last year, Police Superintendent Larry Snelling became chief after serving as a Chicago cop for many years. He mentioned on Tuesday that the police are ready to deal with expected protestors and the potential for large numbers of arrests. “We are prepared, without a doubt,” Snelling declared at a press briefing, joined by representatives from the Secret Service and FBI. The suggested revisions for how police manage mass arrests are still being discussed, but currently involve increased supervision at the scene and post-event debriefings to evaluate the effectiveness of actions taken. Police officers have received additional training in de-escalation techniques and some have also been trained to handle civil unrest and riots, as stated by Snelling. The chief emphasized that mass arrests are considered as a final option. “However, we are well aware of the potential consequences of such scenarios, particularly when a large number of individuals are bound to gather in Chicago, leading to a possible increase in acts of destruction and vandalism.”
